 The 2014 Oil Painters of America Western Exhibition was held at the Mountainsong Galleries in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. Mountainsong Gallery is the proud home to many OPA artists and displays a wide range of art from impressionism to sculptures. The gallery will prove to be a model venue for this year’s exhibition. In the city of Carmel-by-the-Sea, you will find many attractions to entertain yourself with. Carmel Beach is a beautiful stretch of white sand, perfect for sun-bathing, jogging, and picnics. The sunset view from this location is absolutely breathtaking. If the beach doesn’t interest you, the city has plenty of shops and boutiques for you to enjoy. Carmel-by-the-Sea offers a wide range of spas, parks, and restaurants for your pleasure and convenience, all highly rated by natives and tourists alike. During the Oil Painters of America Western Exhibition of Art, we hope you enjoy all the amenities that both the gallery and the city have to offer.

Our Goal

 Our goal is to assemble the finest display of representational oil paintings. The focus in the jurying process was to select paintings that show the highest quality in draftsmanship, color, and composition, emphasizing a diversity in representational style and subject matter.

Awards and Details

Juror of Awards: Marilyn Simandle OPAM

OPA Master Signature member Marilyn Simandle has exhibited in over 80 one-woman shows throughout the United States and has become internationally known and collected by both individuals and corporations worldwide.

Marilyn is a master Signature Member of Oil Painters of America (OPA), a Signature member of the American Watercolor Society, Plein-Air Painters of America (PAPA) and the California Art Club. She has numerous articles in magazines such as Southwest Art and Art of the West. In 1996, her first book on Watercolor painting was published by North Light and since, a second book is available entitled "Contagious Enthusiasm". Marilyn has received many awards in nationally juried shows, among them: the prestigious "High Winds Medal" from the Watercolor Society in 1992 and 1993; in 1997 the Oil Painters of American (OPA) West Coast Regional "First Place"; "People Choice Award", OPA National Show, 1998; and the Shiryl Smithson OPA Memorial Award in 1999.

9:00 a.m. Plein Air Painting with OPA President Ken Cadwallader
Location: Meet at Mountainsong Galleries - please be prompt!
Cost: Free of Charge but please bring canvas, easel, and all of your painting supplies.
Join new OPA president Ken Cadwallader for an amazing day of plein air painting in Carmel and other great locations along the pacific coastline. At the end of the day, meet up for an informal critique session at the gallery. (Critique Time TBD).

6:30 p.m. Artists' Dinner at the Il Fornaio Restaurant
Location: Pine Inn Hotel/Monte Verde St, Ocean Avenue between Lincoln Street
Cost: Guests will order from dinner menu.
A well-known restaurant and favorite of locals, Il Fornaio is an Italian Restaurant located in the Pine Inn Hotel. Come relax with other OPA artists and guests after a full day of painting outdoors. Seating is limited so please RSVP as soon as possible.

9:00 a.m. to Noon Painting Demonstration by Juror of Awards Marilyn Simandle OPAM
Location: Mountainsong Galleries Cost: Free of Charge
This is one demonstration you don't want to miss! Come watch Marilyn Simandle OPAM one of today's most accomplished artists as she demonstrates her painting expertise. To date she has exhibited in over 80 one-woman shows throughout the United States. She has become internationally known and collected by both individuals and corporations worldwide.
In addition, Ms. Simandle has written numerous articles in magazines such as Southwest Art Magazine and Art of the West. In 1996, her first book on Watercolor painting was published by North Light and since, a second book is available entitled "Contagious Enthusiasm."
Raised in the San Francisco Bay area, she received her Bachelor of fine Arts Degree from San Jose State University. Since then, Ms. Simandle has shared her incredible talent by teaching art and conducting workshops throughout California and the United States.

Join us for a casual lunch after Ms. Simandle's painting demonstration at a delightful restaurant just around the corner from the gallery. Seating is limited so please RSVP as soon as possible.

This will include the announcement of this year's Western Regional award winners presented by Juror of Awards and Master Signature member Marilyn Simandle.
